You just need a divx codec, use whatever player you like.
Daz, the doors will not be changed. The doors open instantly when you shoot them, just like all the other 2d metroid games. They don’t turn grey first, cuz grey doors = locked doors.
About the glow, that was my own creativity, I added it because it just looks cool.
Getting 100% accuracy is simply impossible Daz, some things only work in 3d, some things only in 2d.
I think we should allow some of our own creativity, even if it’s not accurate…
The doors stop glowing, then they open. Your glow keeps playing even after the door disappears. At LEAST fix that.
Never mind that, you know, those are EASY to fix, and DO work PERFECTLY fine in 2D. There is NO reason not to do that whatsoever.
Grey doors = locked doors in SM. This is not SM. In Prime, a blue door turns grey, then opens a split second later (assuming it doesn’t load). In Prime 2D, there is no fucking reason not to do this besides laziness or stubbornness.
And yes, the glow looks cool, but it should not remain after the door opens either way. Even if you are gonna be ridiculous enough to not make the doors even remotely Prime-like in their opening sequences, at least make them stop glowing as they open.
By that logic why have anything from Prime? Let’s just make all beams stack, drop visors, and make Super Metroid all over again with Prime’s graphics.
Prime is such an amazing game because of the attention to detail. We can’t possibly emulate it if we don’t pay equal attention to the source.
Just because something was a consequence of being in 3D doesn’t mean we shouldn’t have it. It’s still a part of Prime. People will still find it odd if it’s missing. There is still no reason not to have it whatsoever.
I agree about the problem with doors. The new P2D vid is great. Though I thought I told you there was still a problem with a samus sprite. Refer to the last page if you want to see what I moaned about. The new physics engine needs a few tweeks, like that morphball/jump and jump/morphball trick, very sneeky. Maybe update the scan screens, like put similar looking scan pictures( and stock them into an external file to the executable, encrypted, of course) and the actual scan thesis’s appearance needs changing.
Yeah, entering morph ball mode in Prime takes so long that you pretty much can’t trick the engine into letting you into a morph ball hole without bombs. Don’t want to end up with new sequence-breaking tricks, really, do we?
What I mean is, the more mundane things in the game should work like their 2d counterparts, like Doors and Grapple; you could leave out crouching since it isn’t in Prime, but it’s one of the more recognizable gameplay traits of the 2d games. The gameplay is one thing that doesn’t have to, and shouldn’t, be accurate to Prime.
How is the grapple any different fundamentally? Shoot point, swing back and forth, release.
And again, there is absolutely no reason to not make the doors work like they do in Prime. It doesn’t even affect the gameplay. It’s just a little detail that makes it feel more authentic.
In Prime, you can only use the grapple when you are near a grappling thing. And it automatically locks on; you don’t have to aim. And then you automatically swing. So Prime’s grapple basically uses itself.
As for the doors, it isn’t like every game does it differently. The doors have been operating that way since 1986.
In Super, you aim at a grapple point, hold the button, start swinging back and forth automatically, and use the directions to aim your swing. Time the release of the button to reach new distances.
In Prime, you aim at a grapple point, hold the button, start swinging back and forth automatically, and use the directions to aim your swing. Time the release of the button to reach new distances.
The only difference is that you can’t fire it when not near a grapple point, and there’s never any reason to in Prime anyway, because no enemies are weak to it.
Metroid 1 closes doors that haven’t been entered in a while. Just like Prime, and just like P2D really should do. At LEAST make them re-close.
Also, the doors turning grey and ceasing to glow is part of the canon lore by now. I dunno if Prime 1 touched on it, but 2 and 3 mention that the doors have colored energy shields to prevent accidental opening, and that only once the shield is temporarily down can the doors be opened. This is said specifically of Federation doors, which Pirate doors are based on, as well as of Chozo doors. Prime 1 features both Pirate and Chozo-made doors.
Therefore, not only for the sake of accuracy but also in the interest of upholding canon, P2D’s doors should cease glowing and turn grey before opening, and preferably not open immediately–at least have a brief wait to show that the door is ‘activated’, but not enough to interfere with running through them. I can understand not wanting the doors to stay closed until you approach them, but at least do this much.
I agree with Daz, it really shouldn’t be overlooked. Also does it really matter if the only reason the doors worked the way they did in prime because of loading times? Not really if the door opens right as I shoot it I know I’m going to think “o.0 wtf?” i’m so used to the loading times in prime games that it really shouldn’t be left out. People may gripe about it like 072 but it’s really necessary to add that little effect. i mean come on how much coding or tweaking does it really take? Not much, I used Game Maker for a while and i’m well aware of it’s limits but this doesn’t even touch the ceiling.
Maybe for grappling, you press a certain button to confirm targeting and another to actually swing. And if there are several proximate grappling points, you press that button plus left or right. I can’t suggest that it should be like SM because I didn’t play enough to get that far. That is my suggestion.
First off id like to say that what you guys are doing is totally friggin awsome. im a big fan of Metroid and so far your project is a wonderful tribute to primes masterpiece. anyways… my point is…
i live in the USofA and the above links (samus.co.uk) cameup 404 for me. are they broken in the uk, or is this an intl internet issue? your main page loads fine though (m2d.110mb.com).
ive noticed this prob. over the course of the last… oh… 10 mos, i think. if anyone can find a fix, or host your files on a .com server id be most apreciative.
Again, so far your doing a wonderful job, keep up the good work (please)
Samus.co.uk died several months ago, and now its owner is just messing around with the address. All the P2D files that were being hosted there have been deleted, and our original website (mp2d.co.uk) had to be changed to metroidprime2d.co.uk (which is the same as mp2d.110mb.com). There shouldn’t be any problem loading them if you’re in the US, as a lot of the members here live in the US, too, including myself. The latest demos should be available on the website.
