Religion, Science... Beliefs ok?!

lol
reread it

What about dinosaurs?
What about electricity?
What about disease?
What about ‘magic’?
The list never ends.
Yeah, excuses are made with no thought put into them. Oh well.
I don’t make excuses, if I don’t know the answer I’m not afraid to say “I don’t know.” I wish more people had the balls to say that. (No one on this forum as far as I know needs to grow a set, I’m mainly poking at conservatives.)

And no, it doesn’t really say how old the Earth is, it sort of dates humans back as far as it can to like… Noah. And that’s only those really spiffy Bibles that do all the work for you (Read: Biased) and have two page long footnotes baby-walking you through everything.

well since it says the earth was created, and then man like… same day
yeeeeeeah
it basically dates to around 5kish years ago

One specific guy claimed to have calculated it and said it was around 6k years ago.

And if God did create man and the earth in the same day, what I said earlier about him being able to create evidence of a past that didn’t occur–thus effectively rendering the truth insignificant to anything but belief–still works to explain that away.

Heh…I remember this one movie based on a play. Inherit the Wind, I think it was called. Anyway, some guy gets put on trial in Tennessee for teaching evolution (mind you, this is, like, a 60’s movie or something. Black and White). So when this guy’s on trial, the guy’s lawyer asks this religious guy (who’s under oath) how old he thinks the Earth is. The religious guy, being die-hard christian, supposes that the Earth is 5k-6k old.

So the lawyer, having read the bible, argues that the Earth could potentially be billions of years old, because the sun wasn’t created until the second day (not sure on that. Point is, sun wasn’t created on the first day), which means that the first day that God spent creating Earth and the Universe and all that is an undefined amount of time, which essentially means that that first day could have been 6 seconds long, or 6 billion years long.

So the guy totally disproved the “Earth is 5k-6k years old” argument that some Christians have by using their own bible against him. Well at this point, the religious guy cracks, and starts naming off the books of the bible, and he’s totally tripping, yelling it out in this courtroom.

The point is, I lol’d when that Christian guy tripped balls when he was proven wrong by his own bible.

Inherit the Wind is a good book/play/movie/whatever. People should check that sucker out.

lol. That sounds freaking awesome. I love anything where conservatives basically get bitch-slapped and told “YOU’RE WRONG” and they can’t argue back.
Although many of them didn’t have a real argument in the first place. I just enjoy it when they can’t even make up a fake argument.

I am a conservative, thank you. >_>

Scored a 58 on my political orientation test.

And I personally am not afraid to say idk, because, well it’s stupid trying to make people think you know everything.

QFT

Then obviously I’m not poking at you.

It was mentioned earlier in this topic that some people believe there is no god when he allows such bad things to happen. Well, there’s a simple explanation for this: free will. You may argue that something like cancer is not caused by free will, but in fact, we are still suffering from Adam and Eve’s choices in the garden (eating the fruit) which started death. God gave humans free will because he wanted us to choose on our own accord who to follow, him or satan, and not just be robots following his every order.

just got back from the hospital after going at 2am
14 hours there to find out there was basically nothing wrong with me
(but they gave me morphine)

That’s right, and besides - humans have existed longer than this. Humans have existed from about ~2.2 MYA, and the earth was created ~4.6 BYA. Although we don’t care about the first 4B years, because nothing really happened back then. The earth was mostly a giant blob of magma, water, rock, and single-celled organisms.

Damn, I hate earth science.

Pomegranate, your argument makes no sense. The fact that we can’t escape our ancestors’ decisions is the polar opposite of free will.

And to add on to this, the only reason I don’t believe in God is because there is not enough legit proof for me to say that he exists. If somehow something happened that would prove to me that he exists, then I won’t deny it, but simply stating that “oh, God exists, and even though we can’t prove it, you should accept the fact since he might do something bad to you” isn’t good enough for me.

And also, if God made bad things happen to people who don’t believe in him, then why doesn’t anything bad happen to followers of other religions (not talking about between the three monotheistic religions, but with other polytheistic and atheistic religions).

And FYI, Buddhism is an atheistic religion - it talks about spirits within oneself, not of a single god that rules over all, so atheism doesn’t necessarily mean anti-religious. Of course, I personally prefer to be a secularist.

Atheists aren’t all non-religious, but they all don’t believe in any god, so there’s absolutely no chance that you are worshiping the Christian God even by mistake.
That’s my theory on why a lot of Christians look down on atheists and leave other religions alone =D

(Once again, I’m not an atheist, it just bugs me when people can’t accept others whom hey would normally get along fine with just because they’re an atheist.)

And luckily I’m not like that, nor are any of the people I know.

Just like I’m getting along fine with yall. :stuck_out_tongue: :unamused:

Ugh… Ok, there’s something bothering me in the New Testament.

1 Timothy 2:11-15
Women should listen and learn quietly and submissively.I do not let women teach men or have authority over them. Let them listen quietly. For God made Adam first, then Eve. And it was the woman, not Adam, that was decieved by Satan, and sin was the result. But women will be saved through childbearing, and by continuing to live in faith, love, holiness, and modesty.

What the FUCK?!
THIS is why I reduce it to the red text, and even with the red text I simplify it to the core basics.
I would almost call this blasphemy, but earlier in the passage Timothy declared he was chosen to preach to the gentiles. WHAT THE HELL MAN?

I’m thinking and hoping this is one of those heavily abridged pieces that The Church (probably in the Dark Ages or just after Rome fell) decided they were going to take advantage of the people’s inability to read and teach themselves. So they shoved this in there to lower woman’s class status, or regulate it.

oh man, you have no idea how many friends ive lost because of religion
they brought it up, told them my thoughts
they got mad at me, swore a few times, then left forever tear

most of the friends i have left are all atheists
like, more then 2/3

I don’t get why Christians try desperately to tell themselves that the sick shit in the bible is mistranslated, or made up by Catholics, or other weird shit. Is it really that difficult to say “The bible is a piece of shit, but I’m going to read it and see if I can derive the good from it.” It shouldn’t hurt you the least bit to just accept some parts of the bible as bad and best ignored, IE. It doesn’t matter whether Jesus himself agreed with them. You don’t need to idolize Jesus to respect his groovy philosophy shindig.
