If you’re gonna pout in the corner while everyone else orgasms while playing the game 72, suit yourself.
I think this game has the potential to surpass the original, it may not, but it sure looks like a winner to me. I’ve always wanted more storytelling. MP2E had more than MP, which was nice, but this title has gonna to the next level adding a whole new depth tot he game.
I think you’re playing hard to get. That or you have a tumor growing in your grew matter effecting your logic or something.
So you didn’t like the last two iterations therefore you’ve decided that you hate this one by default. If you hate this game so much then stop complaining and leave this topic alone. Your not really adding to the discussion, would trolling be more accurate?
Would anyone like to speculate on the ‘power gloves’?
Is there something that PERSONALLY pisses you off about this game? You’re basing everything on what youve seen, but I promise you, It WILL be a great game. It’ll DEFINETLY surpass MP2. Its okay to be dissapointed, but you’ll enjoy it when you get it.
No, I wouldn’t. Actually, I would most likely consider that constructive criticism. But in MP3’s instance, there’s nothing they can do. But more to the point, you’re right. It depends on the situation.
EDIT: On topic, Honestly, I somewhat have to agree with 072. I still think that MP3 will revolutionize the way we look at FPS games, gameplay wise. It will show the the Wii is going to have a good 4 or 5 year run, at the LEAST. But on the other hand, I find myself wanting more. But there is always room for improvement, In everything.
Well, the thing that pisses me off most is that they ditched everything Metroid to make it a mainstream FPS. The linearity, the GF Buddies, the other hunters, the new control scheme; these are the last things that you should find in a metroid game.
And the art hits a nerve because I know the people at Retro are capable of better. WAY better. Metroid Prime’s realism is really important. Echoes got a “what the hell were they thinking” from me. Until the suitless Samus model, where it was more like “what the hell were they thinking”. IF IT AIN’T BROKE DON’T TRY TO FIX IT AND FAIL MISERABLY.
Aside from those points (where the first covered a lot), the rest of the things that get on my nerves are small details, but there are so many of them.
What GF buddies? We haven’t seen any beyond the intro.
We have no idea how the other hunters will be implemented, beyond that there’ll be at least a few boss fights who are actual characters instead of just random giant monsters, which has precident even outside of MPH…
Since when is “the greatest control scheme ever devised for a shooter” a bad thing? Isn’t the entire point of the Wii to give new and fun ways to control games?
As for the art, WTF? Prime didn’t excel because of its realism. It was just dull and uninspired–a great game, but with really bland art direction. One of the few parts where MP2 kicked its ass is in style–MP was just 'generic earth landscape #1, #2, #3… oh, and one random sort-of-alien area," whereas MP2 and 3 are actually breaking the mold like SM did and making crazy alien environments to explore.
I’ll give you the Suitless model. That thing sucked.
But they wont change the gameplay as much as your assuming. It’s not like they’ll be shooting with you and stuff, they’ll just be dying as you walk into the room. It makes it more immersive, because it makes you feel like the situation is really desperate. So far we haven’t seen ANY actual help from GF buddies. The hunter buddies will only take enemies that you can’t. They’ll just be like cutscenes. Makes it more immersive, not to mention it’s a little comforting knowing that you’re not the only on facing giant beserker pirates and shit.
The Linearity. This is the one thing I can’t say I like, but we dont know how much linearity there will be. They said that there WILL be areas that you get that classic metroid backtracking ect…
Only time can tell for that aspect, but I don’t worry, as long as it plays like metroid.
Yeah, the suitless model is even worse this time over.
Where are you all getting this linearity BS? IGN or someone did a writeup on the beginning of the game, and the second planet was confirmed to be fully exploration-based like the classic games, just linked by a spaceship instead of an elevator.
I’d get a link but this is a new computer so I don’t have my history :\
Chozo Ruins was a boring wasteland area, but it did a WAY better job than Agon Wastes. The little details of that place, like the chozo ghost leading you back to the Artifact of Wild, made it not boring. Agon had nothing spectacular.
Phazon Mines was new, but it could be likened to Tourain. The “HQ” of the planet.
Since every area we’ve seen has been said to be linear, odds are so will most of the rest.
I don’t know about you, but even one “Samus, get to your ship” makes me want to kill myself.
Yes we do. For the first part of the game, they catch you after freefalling Ridley battles, then they become corrupted, and we have to kill them all.
It wouldn’t be a problem normally, but now it is just contributing to the switch from FPA to FPS.
That art was fantastic in Prime. Back when Samus’s suit looked metal instead of plastic, and every area didn’t look exactly the same. I would say Temple Grounds, Agon Wastes, and Torvus Bog are good canidates for ‘generic earth landscape #1, #2, #3’.
I have to say that I disagree with both Daz and 072. Metroid Prime’s art style was anything but dull and uninspired- particularly in the character models. The bosses were original and well designed, the enemies looked great, the environments were gigantic. However, I get the impression you disliked the lack of slick details present in MP2. If that’s the case, it’s more the lack of industrial detail, isn’t it? Sanctuary Fortress had an abundance of those details, but no huge technological area really fit in Metroid Prime. Metroid Prime focused more on atmosphere via realism, which, personally, I prefer. I wouldn’t call the Earth areas generic, either, because of how well done they were- it takes skill to implement such radically different areas without making the game feel skippy.
However, I also don’t agree that Metroid Prime 3’s art style is deplorable, and I also think that it’s an incredible jump of logic to write off the whole game based on the few glimpses of it Retro has graced us with. Samus’s new corruption suit strikes me as interesting and different, the new space pirates look cool, the biological space pirate boarding craft is an awesome idea, the voiceovers ADD the atmosphere that Metroid is known for, it doesn’t destroy it. Little things like the new grapple beam gimmicks are awesome. And, that said, of course the levels insofar are linear- people who play the demos won’t have enough time to backtrack and explore. This was true in both Prime and Prime 2’s demo level- the frigate in Prime 1 was incredibly linear.
I do, however, dislike how Metroid Prime 3 is putting so much emphasis on Samus’s zero suit, which is turning her into a sex symbol rather than maintaining her aura of anonymity. I also do agree that the new hunters are as retarded as hell- purple lady and ice dude? WTF? MPH’s Hunters were much more creative, and I know Retro can do better than that. I’m only thankful you’ll be able to kill them.
Outside of that, though, it’s impossible to judge MP3 just yet, so STFU.
Yes, Prime and Super’s environments were similar in theme–but while Super’s still felt cool and alien, Prime’s were just Earth with giant bugs.
Again, there are areas confirmed to be very NONlinear, so…
What’s wrong with having NPCs in the intro? Oh no, heaven forbid the series change any to prevent from getting stagnant. Why does she have to be alone for 100% of every single game? I’m not saying I want a partner to follow her the whole time, but it’s just the damn intro! It’s there to get you into the story, and other characters help that a hell of a lot. :\
We only know about the first area for the hunters. They’ll probably just show up as boss fights with occasional cutscene appearances–y’know, like Dark Samus in 2.
It’s still FPA. There are still huge exploration areas. You know, Prime’s intro was completely linear. As was Super’s. That doesn’t make teh entire game a shitty non-Metroid linear game. Whaddayano? Corruption’s intro is linear. … So fucking what?
Torvus is one of my favorite game areas ever. It may be a bit Earthy at times, but it felt ALIVE, unlike any area in Prime. Though I’ll give you the suit point–it looked awesome in Prime. Very metallic.
Regarding linearity, Daz:
It’s not that the areas themselves are linear, just the way you visit them and what you do there. MP3, at least from what we’ve heard, follows the MP2/MPH idea of going to one area, accomplishing a goal, going to the next, accomplishing the same goal, etc. You have to get some “Aurora” super-computer units back online on each planet. MP2 and MPH were criticized for being too linear. MP had nothing like that for the areas–it was just free exploration and you’d never know what would happen next. Its downside for many people was just that the nonlinearity didn’t come with a fast way to explore the planet. Maybe MP3 will manage to get around its potentially-linear plot, but it doesn’t look promising with the history of the last few Metroid games.
However, I’ve read now that with the ship visor you can summon the ship to various landing pads or stations on the planets. This could mean that you can choose which place to land on each planet, thus acting just like elevators but speeding up exploration by not limiting you to one destination. So this might not add a huge amount of linearity as I originally thought. But this does make me miss when you find cool connections between areas, like finding that the Brinstar tube is actually in Maridia and you can destroy it with the power bomb in SM, or the almost-hidden Phazon Mines-Magmoor elevator, or the secret sector connections in Fusion, or getting from Chozodia to Crateria in ZM… It could be pulled off on individual planets, but nowhere near as awesomely. But I digress.
Hopefully you’ll get all the Aurora units back online early in the game and can move more towards defeating Dark Samus and phazon in a nonlinear fashion.
